The pub chain said it would cut prices on all food and drink for a day to support the campaign. On September 23, the company will cut prices by 7.5% before the VAT rate increases next month.

Currently, all food and drink in pubs is subject to five percent VAT as a result of the temporary VAT reduction made during last year’s pandemic.

However, on October 1, VAT will drop to 12.5%.

The 12.5% VAT rate will apply between October 1 of this year and March 31, 2022, before reverting to the standard rate of 20%.

Wetherspoons chairman Tim Martin told the Daily Mail that the 20% VAT was “unfair” on ads.

“Customers of our pubs on Tax Equality Day will find that their food and drink prices will be lower than normal.

“However, due to the VAT increase to 12.5%, we will have to increase food prices by around 50p per meal.

“We urge the Chancellor to create fiscal equality between pubs and supermarkets by making the current VAT regime for pubs permanent.

“It should be noted that the main impact of tax inequality is on main streets and city centers, which depend heavily on a variety of successful hotel businesses for economic, social and employment success.”

Earlier this month, the pub chain apologized to its customers after its Carling and Coors supplies struggled to reach pubs across the country.

In a statement, Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon said: “We are having supply issues with Carling and Coors, which means some ads do not have the products available.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused. We know the brewers are trying to fix the problem.
