Although Election Day is over and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is set to form another minority government, more than a million mail-in ballots have yet to be counted across the country.

While in many ridings, mail-in votes will only deepen a result or leave the winner with a slightly less glowing victory, some ridings too close could see a change in who will travel to Ottawa.

One of those races is Vancouver Granville, where incumbent Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed is just 230 votes ahead of NDP newcomer Anjali Appadurai, with 6,264 mail-in ballots to count. But this is not the only riding in the Lower Mainland that could change. In South Surrey – White Rock, Conservative Kerry-Lynne Findlay beats Liberal Gordie Hogg by 2,299 votes, with 4,767 mail-in ballots to count.

In the riding of South Okanagan – West Kootenay, 6,693 mail-in ballots have yet to be counted in a race where only 3,619 votes separate Richard Cannings of the NDP from Conservative Helena Konanz, second.

On Vancouver Island, Nanaimo – Ladysmith remains in limbo with 989 votes separating NDP favorite Lisa Marie Barron from Conservative Tamara Kronis. There are still 7,572 votes to count, which puts not only the NDP and the Conservatives in the running, but also Paul Manly of the Greens who is 2,734 votes behind the favorite.

In Alberta, Edmonton Center remained contested as Liberal Randy Boissonnault was just 136 votes ahead of Conservative James Cumming, with 3,191 mail-in ballots to count.

Overall, Elections Canada received 1,025,896 mail-in ballots, the majority from Canada – including incarcerated voters and the Canadian Armed Forces – but over 20,000 from overseas by the evening deadline of ballot.

Returning officers will begin counting mail-in ballots after completing a verification process, which involves verification to ensure that voters who mailed ballots have not attempted to vote. in person. This process only started on Tuesday morning and can take up to 24 hours. Mail-in ballot results in some ridings may not begin to be released until Wednesday and could take several days.

All candidates running in a constituency may have representatives present to observe the counting process.
