TEXARKANA, Ark. – Residents of Miller County have just under two weeks to pay property taxes without penalty. Traffic to the courthouse reflects the impending deadline.

Miller County Tax Collector Laura Bates said her office, which is currently and temporarily housed on the first floor of the Landmark Building at 210 North State Line Ave., is getting busier by the day.

She said about 35% of the property taxes owed had not yet been collected. October 15th is the deadline.

So far, $ 18 million has been raised and about $ 10 million is still overdue, Bates said.

She also said that since about September 27, her office has received more than 700 tax payments, and she expects that number to increase as October 15 approaches.

With limited parking and a lobby, Bates encourages taxpayers not to wait until the last minute to avoid a long waiting period.

“Since the start of the pandemic, I have worked very hard on other ways for taxpayers to do business without having to physically enter the office,†she said.

Residents can pay their property taxes and get receipts from the office’s website: millercollector.com.

On that website, “they will also be able to notify us of a change of address, view county ordinances relating to voluntary taxes, and view monthly collection reports,” she said. “There is also a link to appraise their personal property online.

Bates then said that for convenience she set up a drop box at the Miller County Sheriff’s Office (located on East Street) starting Monday.

The box will allow residents to park in the Sheriff’s Department parking lot, ride it, and drop off payments without having to get out of their vehicle.

“I ask that no money be left in the box,†Bates said. “Citizens will be required to leave checks, cashier’s checks or money orders only. I also ask them to include identifying information with their payments, so that we can apply it to the correct account.”

For residents who wish to send their property tax payments, Bates said they can at 400 Laurel St., Suite 111, Texarkana, AR 71854. Payments must be postmarked by October 15.
