Holiday closures Christmas Eve, Christmas Day: garbage cans, mail, buses

Saturday is Christmas. Because of the holidays:

• The city of Columbus and other local, county, state and federal government offices will close Friday due to the federal Christmas holiday and will remain closed until Monday.

• There will be no regular mail delivery on Saturdays. Priority Mail Express will be delivered on Saturday / Christmas Day to limited locations for an additional charge. Post offices will be open on Friday / Christmas Eve, although some may have extended hours while others may have limited hours. Search online for “Find USPS Locations” and enter your zip code to verify local post office hours of operation. Mail will be picked up from the blue collection boxes on Friday, but it is recommended that you drop your mail in the collection box before noon, regardless of the stated collection time.

• Parking meters in Columbus will be free on Saturday Christmas Day, but parking restrictions will remain at certain meters, such as in residential parking permit areas and areas marked for valets, taxis and cargo. Motorists are encouraged to read the signs. The Columbus Parking Violations Office and Passage Permit Office will be closed on Friday for the government holiday and reopen on Monday.

• There will be no Columbus waste collection on Friday. For residents who have been assigned a collection color, garbage collection will be advanced by one day this week. For Ruby collection areas, a collection will be made on Thursday, December 23.

Rumpke’s recycling and garden waste collections will go as planned this week, including Friday / Christmas Eve. Households are expected to drop off their recycling containers and yard waste by 6 a.m. on Friday.

• All locations at the Columbus Metropolitan Library will be closed on Friday and Saturday. Due to a staff shortage, the library system is also closed on Sundays until at least January 9.

• The Central Ohio Transit Authority will operate on a regular schedule on Saturday and Christmas Day. COTA’s customer service call center, as well as the pass sales office at 33 N. High St., will be closed on Saturday.

• The Ohio State University campus offices will close Thursday and remain closed until Wednesday, December 29, to reopen on Thursday, December 30, according to the university’s human resources schedule online. There are no classes; classes will resume on January 10. The Columbus State Community College campus offices will be closed Saturday through January 2 and reopen on January 3. There are no classes; Spring semester classes will start on January 17th.
