The sister of tragic footballer Emilinano Sala is in critical condition in hospital in Argentina after what is believed to have been a suicide attempt.

Romina Sala, 29, the mother of a six-year-old son, was rushed to hospital in Santa Fe, northern Argentina on Monday evening after being found unconscious at her home.

Romina, who led the Sala family’s fight for justice following the tragic death of her brother in 2019, was found by a friend who visited her after receiving messages “about” WhatsApp.

Emiliano Sala’s sister, 29, is said to be in critical condition after attempting to kill himself more than two years after the footballer’s disappearance and death, according to Argentinian media.

Romina Sala, a spokesperson for the family since January 2019, is being treated at the Jose Maria Cullen Hospital in Santa Fe, Argentina, anonymous hospital sources told the TN Deportivo site.

On Tuesday, doctors told Argentinian newspaper La Nacion that Romina was “on a ventilator and her condition was critical”.

“We are working with a large group of specialists, trying to save his life,” they added.

Romina had become the de facto spokesperson for the Sala family when she flew to the UK to lead efforts to locate her brother’s body after a plane crashed in which he was in the Channel.

Emiliano, 28 and a talented striker, had flown from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff on January 21 to make a £ 15million transfer between the clubs when his plane crashed near the island of Guernsey.

Search teams could not find the wreckage for two weeks until a private mission paid for by the family finally located it on February 8.

Inside the broken plane, they found Emiliano’s body and he was brought back to Argentina so he could be buried.

The body of pilot David Ibbotson has still not been found.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Ibbotson had been hired for the theft by David Henderson, 66, who was believed to have been behind the controls on the fateful trip but had outsourced the work.

Neither Ibbotson nor the plane he flew was licensed for commercial flights, investigators found.

Ibbotson was also ‘not competent to fly’ at night or in bad weather, which affected his trip from Nantes to Cardiff.

The report concluded that the plane crashed in mid-air as it was traveling too fast and Ibbotson lost control while trying to avoid bad weather.

Emiliano's body was found after the single-engine Piper Malibu plane carrying the 28-year-old Argentinian, involved in a multi-million pound transfer from FC Nantes in France to Cardiff City FC, crashed north of Guernsey.

Henderson is currently facing prosecution for endangering the safety of an aircraft, as well as for attempting to unload a passenger without valid clearance. He pleaded not guilty to both counts.

The case has been delayed by the Covid pandemic, which has caused frustration for Sala’s family as an investigation into his death can only be carried out after the proceedings are completed.

In January, the family released a statement saying they are “still waiting for answers” amid growing frustration over the time it takes to learn all the facts about Emiliano’s death.

Romina had continued to write and post about her brother on social media after his tragic death – alternately angry, sincere and deep.

Sharing a picture on her birthday, October 31, two years ago, she wrote, “There are no words to describe the pain.

‘Happy Birthday my brother! Wherever you are, give us the strength to continue. I would like everything to be different… I promise you that we will not stop until the end. Kisses to heaven. ‘

After Emiliano’s death, Romina also lost her father – Horacio – who died at his home in Progreso three months after the plane crash.

Horacio, 58, died of a heart attack in bed having “never overcome” the death of his son, according to local reports at the time.

The new tragedy comes as the Sala family filed a lawsuit in March over Emiliano’s death, naming 13 defendants, including Cardiff City FC, FC Nantes, football agents Willie and Mark McKay and various related companies to the plane.

The complaint was lodged in London by Romina, her brother Dario and their mother, Mercedes.
