2022 Self Visa® Credit Card Review – Forbes Advisor

Self Visa® credit card* compared to the Petal® 1 “no annual fee” Visa® credit card

For those whose credit score is clouded by past mistakes, the $0 “no annual fee” Visa® Petal® 1 credit card, issued by WebBank, Member FDIC, may be a good option. It’s one of a small batch of credit cards aimed at those who don’t have great credit and don’t require an initial security deposit. But if your credit is fair or better, you might be better off with another card, including one offered by Petal.

Self Visa® credit card* compared to the Tomo credit card*

The Tomo credit card with no annual fee*, which is issued on the Mastercard network, uses banking and other financial metrics to determine approval and credit limit, and offers unlimited 1% cash back on all eligible purchases to boot. But the approval process can be slow, and you’ll have to agree to log into your bank account for a weekly automatic bill payment.

The Tomo card is for those with no credit history, but you will need to show a positive bank history or salary to be eligible for approval. It may not be the right card for someone coming out of bankruptcy or with other financial constraints.

Self Visa® credit card* compared to the Discover it® secure credit card

Among the secure cards, the Discover it® secure credit card stands out. Few secure cards offer cash back, but this one does and there’s no annual fee. With the Discover it® secure credit card, you’ll earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. Plus, earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases, which is comparable to many of Discover’s non-guaranteed alternatives.

As this is a secured card, your credit limit will be equal to the amount of your deposit. There is no account creation over time as with the Self Visa® credit card*is the required precursor to adding to a Self Credit Builder account. But if you can make a minimum opening deposit of $200, you’ll not only earn rewards, but Discover will automatically review your account from seven months onwards to see if you’re eligible to have your deposit returned to you.
